Statement on comments at “My Jerusalem” panel discussion

The University of Winnipeg values the diversity of people who form our campus and community. UWinnipeg supports open dialogue, freedom of expression and is committed to creating safe spaces for respectful discussion.

We oppose the targeting of people and communities because of race, religion, disability, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, nationality, gender, sexual orientation and immigrant status. The University of Winnipeg strongly opposes antisemitism in all forms.

The February 28 panel discussion “My Jerusalem,” which was organized by a coalition of community members, has been criticized as being anti-Israel. Therefore, the University will review this event in light of the concerns that have been raised.

This Spring, we will also be reviewing our Respectful Workplace and Learning Environment policy and the alignment of our event-based procedures with this policy. We will also examine the working definition of antisemitism from the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, which was endorsed by the European Union parliament last year.

In the meantime, anyone with concerns regarding the February 28 event is invited to contact Dean Peachey, Acting Executive Director of the University of Winnipeg Global College at d.peachey@uwinnipeg.ca.

UPDATE: OCTOBER 18, 2018:

The University of Winnipeg’s (UWinnipeg) response to the report provided by the Human Rights and Diversity Officer in respect of the My Jerusalem event, February 28, 2018

In response to concerns raised by community members, the University Human Rights and Diversity Officer conducted a review of the My Jerusalem event and concluded that comments made during the event were antisemitic. The University regrets the antisemitic statements made at the My Jerusalem event.

The My Jerusalem event was not a University-organized event; however, the Respectful Workplace and Learning Environment (RWLE) Policy applies. The RWLE provides a strong framework for creating a safe environment for everyone who comes to UWinnipeg. Based on the Manitoba Human Rights Code and the Workplace Safety and Health Act, the RWLE Policy is explicit and clear in setting out the expectations for respectful conduct.

Whether providing space, hosting or organizing events or discussions, the University strives to ensure a respectful environment. In response to the recommendations contained within the report, the University will work with members of the Jewish community and other racialized groups to enhance our campus environment and promote safety and inclusivity.

The University thanks the Human Rights and Diversity Officer for their review of the My Jerusalem event.
